Tournament Format

The Prep League Golf Tournament determines the Prep League champion in golf each year.  This year It was held at the Woodberry Forest Golf Club on May 17 & 18.  Each of the ten schools in the Prep League sends a team consisting of six golfers.  The golfers tee off at 1:00 p.m. on Friday in a shotgun start.  They begin on Holes number One, Four, and Seven and play eighteen holes in foursomes.  The best four scores from each team are added together for a total team score.  Pairings on Saturday are determined by the scores on Friday, and play begins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.  The total team scores from each day are added together to determine the final standings.  Individual All Prep honors are given to the golfers who shoot the ten lowest 36 hole scores.

Trinity Tournament Results

The Trinity Golf Team placed seventh in the 2002 Prep League Golf Tournament.  This was a disappointing finish for us, but we were only two strokes behind sixth place Norfolk Academy, and Eric Bliley(36), David Isaacs(40), Michael Staples(41), and John Duni(41) shot 158 on the final nine holes.  This matched our low score of the year, and had we played at that level throughout the tournament, we would have placed fourth.  We also had a lot of fun, so the trip was a success.

• First Round

We left school on Friday at about 10:30 a.m., ate lunch at the MacDonald's in Orange at about noon, and arrived at the Woodberry driving range around 12:20 p.m.  Tee times began at 1:00 p.m.  Michael Staples(82), David Isaacs(84), and Rich Aust(84) all played well, but we couldn't get a fourth low score.  John Duni played pretty well but got a six over par nine on the par three Ninth Hole and ended with a 91 which we had to count.  We finished the first round in eighth place with a team score of 341.  We had dinner at The Silke Mille Grille in Orange and spent the night at the Holiday Inn Express in Orange.  (Permission Slip and Information)

• Second Round

When we awoke on Saturday, it was raining extremely hard, but by 8:30 a.m., the rain had stopped, and by 10:30 a.m., which was when play began, the skies were clearing.  This was a much better day for Trinity.  David Isaacs(82) continued his fine play and ended with the low 36 hole score(166) on the team, three strokes ahead of Michael Staples(169).  John Duni survived the Ninth Hole and shot 84, and Eric Bliley came back from a disappointing first round and shot 79, the low eighteen hole score for Trinity.  Eric shot a one over par 36 on the back nine.  Our total team score on Saturday was 332 which put us in fifth place for the day and seventh place(673), two strokes behind sixth place Norfolk Academy(671), for the tournament.  We were also the only team to improve our position in the standings from the first to the second day.
