Founders Created Christian Nation
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Steven Linas' letter calling Ross Mackenzie narrow-minded
and sophomoric reminds me of Jesus' statement about removing the beam from your
own eye before removing the splinter from another's eye.
Critics ought to check out history before saying we aren't
a Christian nation. While it is true we have become a secular nation in the past
50 years, it is also true that we were known as a Christian nation for more than
150 years. Even the U.S. Supreme Court said, in Church of the Holy Trinity v.
U.S.
in 1892, "This is a Christian nation."
Not one of our Founding Fathers ever suggested that we
should be a theocracy, but it would be hard to find one of them who didn't
believe they were establishing a Republic based upon the principles found
nowhere else but in the Old and New Testaments. Even Benjamin Franklin said on
June 28, 1787
(quoting from the Bible), "Except the Lord build the house, they labor in
vain that build it." David Barton's Original Intent details the
facts.
David Coburn.
